3484 Magazine Fall 2020

This issue delved into issues related to the election, so I styled the cover after Georgia's voter sticker. The peach texture is featured throughout the magazine. As with the Spring 2020 issue, each article has its own line icon, which are combined into a logo variant in the table of contents. The line icons create consistency throughout the magazine while still providing enough room for creative expression. We designed this issue in only a few weeks, as we had to follow a tight deadline in order to publish before the election.

Climate Issue Promo Video

I created the climate issue promo video using Adobe After Effects and Photoshop. My goal was to create a short promotional video we could post on Instagram to get people excited about the upcoming issue. I animated the original cover Photoshop file in After Effects and then added sound effects. The tree ring animation also highlights the Atlanta skyline in the stump.

MARTA Reach UX Design and Animation

I designed an app for MARTA, Atlanta's transit organization, which had over 8,000 users during a six month pilot program. I created this video for MARTA to teach users how to use the MARTA Reach app. I designed the UX/UI seen in the video in Adobe XD, and used React to help translate designs into code. I used Adobe After Effects and Illustrator for the video and animation.

Temperature Increase

This graphic was adapted for the AJC's print, web and social channels. It visualizes temperature increase data from a report released in 2022. I used DataWrapper to visualize the data on a county map of Georgia and then heavily stylized and formatted it using Adobe Illustrator.

Climate Solutions

I pitched, wrote and designed this article. I felt that the climate series was focusing too much on the individual rather than more impactful systemic issues, so I pitched a story on what policies and infrastructure the city of Atlanta could implement. I interviewed several sustainability experts to find the five most impactful solutions.
The graphics were meant to contrast existing systems and new solutions. I used vectors to show existing infrastructure and lined those up with image cutouts of the solutions. I created the icons using AJC photos and photos I took myself which I cut out and edited in Photoshop.

Georgia Economy

NOTE: This is a temporary mock-up that only shows the graphics I created. This series has not yet been published.

I designed graphics for the featured image and each section of this alternate format article. I made the graphics by cutting out, editing, and compositing in-house photos to fit the theme of each section. In retrospect, I likely spent too long on very small details, but it was fun to heavily manipulate images in Photoshop.

Rising Temperature Lead Image

NOTE: This is a temporary mock-up that only shows the graphics I created. This series has not yet been published.

I created the lead image for this article, using the climate style guide I created. I overlayed a vector of Atlanta temperature data over a satellite image cutout of Georgia.

Climate Style Guide

I developed a style for a series of evergreen articles on climate change for the AJC. Some of the articles were to be written and published after I finished my internship, so I created a brief style guide to help the digital storytelling team create new content that matched the graphics I had already created. The style uses image cutouts, vectors, and a custom highlighter effect I created.

AJC Gas Prices Animation

I created this animation as a promotional post for an article on gas prices. I used Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I used heavily-edited photos I took at gas stations around Atlanta to create the board, and then animated the moving numbers and zoom in After Effects.

Breeze Card

I created this graphic for the AJC Instagram page. I edited an image of a Marta Breeze card using Adobe Photoshop to change the "Breeze" logo to say "Free?"

Braves Scoreboard

I created this scoreboard to show the Braves' winning streak in a visually interesting way. I recreated a baseball scoreboard from scratch in Photoshop and included opposing teams and scores. It was featured in several articles and on the AJC Instagram.

Locator Map

One of my roles was to create locator maps for breaking news stories. Depending on the story I used Adobe Illustrator or DataWrapper. For this graphic I used Adobe Illustrator to add labels and styling to a blank Google Maps image.

Disconnected

(Click image to view pdf) This article explores the ways that highways in Atlanta were used as a tool for displacement and segregation. I styled headers and statistics to look like highway signs. The signs were created using Adobe XD and Photoshop. On the third page, I combined present aerial imagery with archival aerial imagery from 1949 to show the destruction caused by the interstate system.

Solving Sprawl

(Click image to view pdf) This was an infographic from the Fall 2021 issue of 3484 Magazine. My goal was to showcase the history and impact of urban sprawl in Atlanta. The cover image is created from Google Earth images that I manipulated to spell "Sprawl." I implemented several data visualizations to show sprawl in Atlanta.

Street Sweeps Article

(Click image to view pdf) This was the last article that I wrote as creative director of 3484. I wanted to address homelessness since a lot of Atlanta news outlets seemed to neglect the voices of unhoused people when reporting on the topic. I reached out to mutual aid organizations in Atlanta who then were able to connect me to unhoused people that were willing to be interviewed.

Changing City

(Click image to view pdf) This was an infographic from the Fall 2020 issue of 3484 Magazine. My goal was to showcase new transit developments, trails and parks around Atlanta. I created icons for each development to give a uniform and understandable visual explanation for what each development would look like. The icons were styled after street cross-section drawings, which are commonly used by city planners

Skyline Article

The Skyline article shows new buildings in Atlanta by depicting how they will change the city’s skyline.

Bike Lanes

I created this graphic for a caption on a new protected bike lane on Spring St, a road with several different student housing apartments where many Georgia Tech students live. I decided to create an overhead view of the street paint used to designate bike lanes. I found a seamless asphalt texture and then created all of the other graphics in Adobe XD. I exported those into Photoshop to make it seem like they were really painted on the street. Click here to see the full 3484 Instagram account

Stone Mountain

I created this graphic when calls to remove confederate monuments in Georgia began to gain more attention. I wanted to make the graphic reminiscent of someone removing graffiti. I used Photoshop to add the “paint” effect to the original Stone Mountain image and to adjust the color of the paint roller. Click here to see the full 3484 Instagram account

Hottest Year on Record

I created this graphic in Adobe Illustrator for a post about 2019 being Atlanta’s hottest year on record. It features Atlanta’s iconic pencil building as the center of a flame. Click here to see the full 3484 Instagram account

Marta Map

I created a map to show a bus rapid transit route in Atlanta. The paths were originally polyline files that I added to a map in Mapbox Studio, but I converted them to vectors and combined them with aerial imagery in the Adobe Suite. I wanted to use aerial imagery because our Instagram posts are usually pretty reliant on vector graphics, so I always try to add in actual photographs when I can. Sometimes aerial imagery can be confusing since most people don't use satellite maps in everyday life and aren't familiar with an overhead view of their city. However, this map worked out because of the number of distinct landmarks such as stadiums and Downtown Atlanta's unique grid. If I were to make this map again, I would either use a more contrasting color for the vectors or add a subtle shadow to help separate the vector graphics from the background map. APD Budget

I compiled the data and created a graph to present City of Atlanta budget information. This was created during the height of the Black Lives Matter protests in Atlanta in Summer 2020, as the city was focused on the police department’s budget. I wanted to make the graphic as clear and accurate as possible, as I had seen other graphs circulating on social media with incorrect numbers. Click here to see the full 3484 Instagram account

Fall 2020 Promo Video

The Fall 2020 promo video was created from original footage which I edited with Adobe Photoshop and After Effects. Originally, the lamp post in the video had a 3484 sticker and the number "43." I used photoshop to edit an in-focus frame, replacing the sticker with the Spring cover voter sticker and changing the 43 to 3484. Then I matched the movement and focus in After Effects.

Connections Issue Promo Video

I created the connections issue promo video using Adobe After Effects and Photoshop. Opportunity Zone Illustration

I created this photo illustration to represent gentrification. I used Photoshop to combine images of an old dilapidated building, a new glass building, and a mural in Atlanta.

3484 2021 Animation

I created this animation to bring attention to 3484 Magazine and to explain the magazine to new readers. I wanted to create a video that was visually interesting, shareable, and informative.
Using cut-outs from various issues of the magazine, I recreated a similar style from my Sam's Neat Projects YouTube channel (seen in the miscellaneous section on this site). We didn't have a budget for this video, so I used a homemade overhead rig with basic lighting in my bedroom.

MARTA Reach UX Design and Animation

I created this video for MARTA to teach users how to use the new MARTA Reach app. I also designed the UX/UI seen in the video, and helped implement it in the pilot program using React. I used Adobe After Effects and Illustrator for the video and animation.

MARTA Reach Driver App UX and Animation

I created this animation for MARTA to teach drivers how to use the new MARTA Reach app. I also designed the user experience seen in the video, which was used by MARTA in the pilot program. I used Adobe After Effects and Illustrator.

MARTA Reach Monitor App UX

I designed the user experience for the app that monitored all MARTA reach shuttles and presented dashboards of system statistics. I worked with MARTA and programmers to ensure the design was suited to the needs of the MARTA employees that would operate the app.

Ryder Animation

I created this animation for Ryder, a major trucking company, to explain how their new autonomous trucking system works. I used Adobe After Effects, Premiere, and Illustrator.

On Demand System Animation

This video explains how the on demand transit pilot works on a user-level. My goal was to create a professional and understandable animation to explain the system in a way that anyone could understand. It also features prototypes of the app for the transit pilot with MARTA, Atlanta's transit system. I created this video using Adobe XD, Illustrator, After Effects, and Premiere.

ODMTS Banner Logo

I designed this logo for the lab's On Demand Multi-modal Transit System project. It was used in banners, so I created a wide logo with twisting lines representing the three transit modes in the system. I used Adobe Illustrator and XD.

SAMViz Explanation

I created a custom in-house visualization engine for the Socially Aware Mobility Lab using Python. There wasn't an easy tool that worked for our lab, so I made one that would work for our data and show only what was important. It displays location data over time, rendering frames and outputting a full video.

On Demand System

I was asked to create short clips of the lab’s on demand transit system in action. This clip shows the full system from a wide view. I created this visualization using Python and Leaflet. The system has been used by lab members for projects for MARTA, BART, and Ryder. It includes different modes, allowing the camera to follow a specific vehicle, change icons, and adjust many other animation settings.

Analytics Dashboard Mockup

I designed an analytics dashboard to increase the value of the Verisolutions system. I had to be conscious of mobile and desktop versions as well as the various levels of the platform and types of sensors.

Postcard created to send to restaurants as an ad for the Verisolutions temperature monitoring system.

Piezo Buzzer Tutorial

Tutorial created for a simple Arduino component. I focused on explaining how the part worked and how to use it with Arduino boards and software.

Solargraphy Tutorial

Tutorial created for solargraphy pinhole cameras. A photographer from Poland in the comments got pretty angry at me for this video for some reason.

Jitter-Bot Tutorial

Tutorial created for an easy-to-build “robot.” This video was designed as a project for kids and parents to work on together.

Marietta Street Time Lapse

Whenever I go on the roof of my apartment, I'm constantly looking at something new since there's always so much cool stuff going on. It was too windy for a traditional time-lapse this night, so I tried to recreate that feeling in this video by using a tripod and manually taking exposures of different lengths at irregular intervals to add a more organic feel. This was something I made for fun one night, but I would love to recreate this on a larger scale for a music video or promotional video one day.

This map was on display at Marta Army’s Atlanta Streets Alive booth. It calls attention to the lack of transit accessibility for families in Atlanta. Marta Army is an Atlanta-based transit advocacy group that I worked with from 2019 to 2020.

Chinchilla Music Video

I was asked to create a music video with interesting visuals. The song was about a stalker, so I decided to style it similar to a ransom note. I used a combination of actual stop-motion photography and faux stop-motion photography by animating images in Final Cut Pro.

Pothole Bar Graph Concept

I created this as a concept before starting at the AJC to demonstrate the style I wanted to create for data graphics. I wanted to make a graphic that conveyed information but also would be visually interesting and very sharable. In Atlanta, the city is notorious for using steel plates to cover potholes. I took pictures of steel plates, and used those to create the bars for this graph.

Supreme Court Concept

I created this storyboard as a concept before starting at the AJC to demonstrate the style I wanted to create for data graphics. This animation would be used for articles about the Supreme Court that featured data. Specifically, it would be used as a social media graphic since it's designed to be eye-catching and sharable. The animation would start with a static shot of the Supreme Court, then the columns move to form a bar chart.

Fridge Town

This is a fun personal project I started in my apartment. I don't think it's applicable to any jobs (even though I did once work at a refrigerator startup), but I had a lot of fun with it and wanted to share. I drew buildings and roads onto isometric patterns that I printed onto magnet sheets, which allowed all the buildings to be easily connected with the same scale and perspective. After drawing a building I would cut it out and put it on our fridge. I documented each new addition, and even got friends and roommates to add to it too. Once I had enough pictures I turned it into a gif to show its progress over time. I documented the process in a thread on Twitter.
